Ripple Deploys Additional layer for XRPL Wallets
- The XRP Ledger gets an additional layer to the wallets of trusted accounts.
- Wietse Wind, an XRPL Labs developer, confirmed in a tweet today that the implementation was live and practical via the XRPL Wallet.
The XRP Ledger has implemented an amendment that expands the signer list from 8 to 32 signers. This is a four-times increase in the number of signers that can be authorized to sign transactions on behalf of an account.
The amendment, called the Extended Signer List (ESL), was proposed by a member of the XRP Ledger community and was approved by over 80% of XRP holders. The amendment went live on October 18, 2022.
The ESL amendment is designed to increase the security of wallets that rely on signer lists. A signer list is a list of trusted accounts that have the right to sign transactions on behalf of another account. If the signers pass the minimum quorum, any transaction signed becomes automatically valid.
The previous limit of 8 signers was considered to be too low for some use cases. For example, a wallet that needs to be able to sign transactions with multiple signers in different jurisdictions may have needed to create multiple signer lists, which could be cumbersome and error-prone.
The ESL amendment allows wallets to have up to 32 signers, which makes it easier to create more decentralized and secure wallets. The amendment also makes it easier for wallets to support layer two projects, such as EvernodeXRPL and bridges.
Node operators will need to update to version 1.9.4 of the XRP Ledger software in order to support the ESL amendment. Previous versions of the software will be blocked.
The ESL amendment is a significant improvement to the security and usability of the XRP Ledger. It is a welcome development for the XRP community and for the wider blockchain ecosystem.
