Ripple is stepping up to address the pressing issue of drought in Kenya through a groundbreaking blockchain-powered initiative. In collaboration with Mercy Corps Ventures and DIVA Donate, Ripple has introduced an innovative pilot program aimed at providing much-needed financial aid to pastoral communities in Laikipia County, Kenya, who are struggling with the devastating effects of drought.
At the heart of the initiative is Ripple USD (RLUSD), the company’s stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar, designed to offer a secure and efficient way to deliver aid. RLUSD, which operates on both the XRP Ledger and Ethereum blockchains, ensures that donations reach recipients quickly and reliably, bypassing traditional financial bottlenecks.

The pilot program targets 533 pastoralists, who will automatically receive financial support triggered by real-time vegetation health data. The system relies on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a satellite-based metric that monitors vegetation conditions. If the NDVI signals a drought by dropping below a specific threshold by May 31, 2025, the system will trigger the release of RLUSD funds to eligible pastoralists.
This innovative approach represents a significant leap forward in disaster relief. By integrating decentralized finance (DeFi) with satellite technology, DIVA Donate’s platform streamlines the distribution of aid. The system’s use of smart contracts and satellite imagery ensures that financial aid is not only timely but also tailored to the specific needs of affected communities.
Each pastoralist in the pilot will receive approximately $75 in RLUSD, which will be enough to sustain one livestock animal for six months. This timely support helps maintain livestock, a crucial asset for many pastoralists, during the harshest conditions.
