- The Ethereum Foundation is shifting its focus to improving Layer 1 and Layer 2 scaling, along with enhancing user experience.
- Vitalik Buterin will step back from daily operations to concentrate on long-term research and innovation.
The Ethereum Foundation is charting a bold new course for 2025, zeroing in on two key priorities: scaling the network and dramatically improving user experience. This strategic pivot comes as Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-creator, steps back from daily operational duties to concentrate on long-term research and innovation.

Tomasz K. Stanczak, co-executive director of the Ethereum Foundation, announced the change in focus, emphasizing the need to “bring promising technologies closer to reality.” With Buterin no longer entrenched in routine coordination, the Foundation aims to accelerate work on Ethereum’s Layer 1 and Layer 2 scaling, as well as enhance UX through upcoming upgrades like Pectra, Fusaka, and Glamsterdam.

“Each time Vitalik shares insights or communicates a direction, he accelerates major long-term breakthroughs,” said Stanczak. He highlighted that Buterin’s recent writings on zkVMs, RISC-V, and privacy have already shaped the Foundation’s trajectory. However, Stanczak made it clear: Buterin’s proposals are just the starting point. The Ethereum community will ultimately refine—or even reject—those ideas through collective review.
While Vitalik’s reduced operational role may appear to some as a step back, the Foundation views it as a leap forward. “This gives Vitalik the freedom to explore high-impact areas without being pulled into crises or short-term firefighting,” Stanczak noted.
The Ethereum Foundation is now setting its sights on compressing development timelines. Research once expected to take three to five years could be realized in just one or two, thanks to intensified focus on next-gen execution and consensus layers.
As Ethereum continues to evolve, the Foundation’s renewed commitment to usability and scalability signals a maturing ecosystem—one that is increasingly prepared to meet the demands of mainstream adoption.
For the Ethereum community and crypto at large, the message is clear: the path forward is faster, smarter, and more user-friendly—and the next phase of Ethereum may be its most transformative yet.
